Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Interviewees also had to explain the reasons for choosing a pragmatic behavior in certain situations.

The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and z-tests. It was found that the CLKs frequently resorted to phrases like "sorry" and "thank you." The most important question in pragmatic research is: Why do some learners refuse to accept native-speaker norms? A recent study attempted to answer this question employing a range of experimental tools, including DCTs, MQs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were asked to complete the DCTs in their native language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. They were then invited to an RI where they were asked to think about and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.

The results showed that on average, the CLKs disapproved of the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even when they were able to create patterns that resembled natives. In addition, they were aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors like their personalities, multilingual identities, and ongoing life experiences. They also mentioned external factors, such as relationships and affordances. They described, for example, how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform better in terms of the cultural and linguistic expectations of their university.

The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or penalties they could be subject to in the event that their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their native interactants might think they are "foreigners" and believe they are not intelligent. This was a concern similar to those voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
