The WH-1000XM4s can also allow you to connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and then automatically switch between the two when needed. This feature is accessible through the Sony Headphones Connect App and works well.

A subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitivity of their touch panels. They respond more quickly to the tap of the panel, which makes them easier to control during a call or to listen to music. Sony also included an option that makes voices sound more clear and precise on calls, which is noticeable and a nice touch.

While the WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, they're some of the most comfortable wireless blootooth headphones we've ever tested. The WH-1000XM4s make a better choice over the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC is able to block out more ambient sounds. The B&Ws come with a more flexible EQ and a companion app to tweak the audio performance. The B&Ws are built better and can connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. In addition, they support aptX HD and have an AI-driven engine which is attempting to boost compressed music to high-resolution. 2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 noise-canceling headset is the most current version of a headset that has become a popular choice for commuters and travelers all over the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made its predecessor so popular, but adds USB-C, improved noise cancellation and longer battery life.

Like the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones sport an elegant design and feel that exudes quality. The headband, which is made of plastic, provides an incredibly solid feel due to the hinges made of steel at pivot points. They also have the familiar ratcheting mechanism whenever you retract or extend the ear cups. The cups feature soft cushioned pads that fit securely over the ears and do not apply pressure on your head. When folded they weigh 238 grams. They can be used while wearing an overcoat or sweater since the noise cancellation function is functional even when you aren't on your head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s can't offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are relatively flat and lack the depth that headphones with higher prices might be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are amplified which is great for most music genres but can be problematic for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is good, but lacks the punch.

One feature that's missing is the ability to pause playback when you remove the headset. This is a standard in this price bracket and is something that Bose's rivals have been offering for years. Another oversight was the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app, but it would be nice if there was an option to manually control.

Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, with multipoint as well as more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust the volume and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s come with four microphones that are built-in to hear your voice when you are on the phone. They have excellent call quality, however they don't let you mute the voice during playback like other wireless headphones. Update In February 2022, the firmware update to the QC45s offered manual EQ options in the audio app which is a welcome improvement.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand known for its high-performance headphones that provide long-lasting comfort and a style that lets listeners know they're listening to something truly special. Their first attempt at wireless headphones that cancel out noise the Bathys are a stunning set of headphones that sound and look fantastic. They also have a built-in high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wireless and wired listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for up to 30 hours. We actually got a bit more out of them with more than 40 hours on average of just one charge. If you need to recharge, there's a light on the right ear cup that will turn red when the earphone needs to be charged.

For a pair of headphones at this price, they come with many features. They can be used with multiple devices at once and feature automatic pairing. (You have to select the device you want to pair with each time you listen.) The headphones have an inbuilt microphone that works with voice assistants, such as Siri or Alexa. They also come with an easy-to-use interface that makes it easy to control your music and take calls.

Bathys over-ear headphones perform well in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient sound by an average of 9 decibels. It's not as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless, but it's still effective.

In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones in our tests of blue tooth headphone sound quality, the Bathys did well overall, with a a frequency response that mostly matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with only minor deviations in the bass and mids. The Bathys are bassy sound profile that can make instruments, vocals and cymbals look a bit veiled.

You can wear them anywhere and not worry about whether others listen to your music. Their microphone is suitable for recording via Bluetooth, with only slight distortion between the mid-treble and the treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new update to the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth headphones. The Momentum 3 was a solid, but not spectacular entry in this class. The new model is a significant improvement over the previous model, featuring an elegant design, enhanced gesture control and an enormous battery life.

The improvements here are subtle but they add up to create a pair of over-ears that feel like an upgrade to the old one. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with a hardshell case that protects them while moving. The Momentum 4s are compatible with all devices, wirelss headphones just like other Bluetooth headphones of recent times, like the ones from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They work with both Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but lack the AirPods extra features, such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The biggest improvement is the battery that can last for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation turned on. That's easily double what most of the competitors offer and is enough for a trip of a lifetime without having to worry about finding an outlet to charge it.
