How to Replace an audi keys replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or Audi Advanced Key a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and requires replacement. They're cheap and easy to find particularly when they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your car. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi advanced key because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a common component across the audi car key cover 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
