Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes are a great way to add an elegant look to your home. They are also durable and can last many years when they are maintained properly. However, they can become damaged or degraded with time, due to exposure and normal wear and tear. Fortunately, sash repair specialists can restore your windows to their original condition and keep them looking fantastic for a longer period of time than replacement windows.

Weather stripping is the first issue to take care of when fixing sash windows. It's on both the frame and sash. If it's worn or loose, out, it can lead to drafts, as well as other issues. Sash Hardware

The hardware that supports window sashes is susceptible to wear and tear from the wear and tear of use, and the result can be a door or window that won't open or close easily. The good thing is that fixing and replacing this hardware is typically very simple and cost-effective. If you are having trouble opening a sash spray some oil into the jamb channel. It is essential to have the tools you require before you begin. Begin by marking the position of the hinge channel on the frame with pencil (Photo 1). This will help you to place the channel in the correct location after you've completed. Remove the sash and take out all the hardware, including the beads for parting, cords, and chains that help to hold the sash. Heat gun with nozzle shield and a medium setting will soften any hardened putty. Remove the old sash and put it in a bag with a label.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be replaced to improve the operation of your window sash and decrease energy costs. Sash weights consist of iron or lead cylindricals that are contained in a hidden cavity and connected by ropes to the moveable window sash. They are counterbalancers that allows the window to be shut and opened without the use of electrical or mechanical devices. The sash weights are usually neglected or ignored by homeowners and then turned into scrap when they break; therefore, you may need to search for replacements.

A weight from a sash that fell out of the cavity is difficult to recover, so you will want to find a new one that fits correctly. You will also require a new piece string, a length sashcord and a few sashpulleys to secure the weights you are replacing to the cord.

Older windows made of wood are joined by mortise and tenon joints. Pin punch and hammer can be used to take out the wood pegs holding the parts together. The majority of these pegs have large diameters on one side and a smaller diameter on the other, which is why it is essential to remove the smaller-diameter ones first. Sashes made later in the century made use of glue instead of pegs and can be separated by cutting the glue line using a knife, then tapping the mortised area loose with mallets.

To replace sash cords the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. They are typically screwed or nailed in and must be removed. It may be possible to remove them using an axe or hammer, however, it is best to lay out dust sheets prior to starting any work.

Once the access panel is removed, you can begin working on the sash. Prise the narrow parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves using the chisel or flat bar. If the sash is in place, break the mortise and the tenon joints by using pin punch and hammer or screwdriver, then remove the wood pegs that are on each piece. They're not expensive and simple to install if you buy them from architectural salvage stores.
