How to Replace an audi car key replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and audikey RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and audikey take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're cheap and easy to find particularly in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. If this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor audikey is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a common part that is found across the audi tt key case 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
