Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Size

Height

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety feature is that it can be easily adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or his or her diaper. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side with the press of a button so you can easily lift your baby without getting out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby gets older and more mobile. You should also not add anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For instance the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.

The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers that can be transformed into different types of furniture, like play yards or bassinets. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multiuse bedside cot reviews sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets through the use of a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The CPSC is examining these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
